Writing Contest – Pet Anthology – Paws and Reflect: Tales of Tails (April 17th)

Good Morning, My name is Sheryl and I have been involved in the writing community since I moved to Las Vegas in 2008. I have served as President of the Writers of Southern Nevada and as Critique Group Organizer of the Las Vegas Writers Group. While I still write quite a bit, I have dedicated my time to animal rescue and work with a group called Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas (we were featured in the Review Journal about a month ago). I wanted to find a way to combine my love of writing with my love of animals and decided to create a writing contest. “Paws and Reflect: Tales of Tails” is our first annual short story contest. The top 10 stories will be featured in an anthology by Muddy Pig Press. The prompt is: Pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are our companions, our best friends, our children, even our therapists at times. Is there a wonderful animal who has touched your life? We would love to hear about them in the Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas, first ever, short story contest, Paws and Reflect: Tales of Tails. I was wondering if you would be willing to share this information with your members? This is a wonderful way for writers (and animal lovers) to help the animal community. There is a $25 entry fee in the form of a donation to Hearts Alive Village (a 501c3) and all of the proceeds from the sale of the book go directly to fund our life saving programs. The last date for submissions is April 17th. The link to the contest webpage is: http://www.havlv.com/-writing-contest.html

Grand Canyon Writer’s Retreat – Thea Gavin – June 23-26

  • Late June in the forests of the North Rim means mild weather and wildflowers, with miles of easy, empty trails that reveal all kinds of hidden vantage points from which to view the Grand Canyon’s ever-changing landscape of light and rock. For three weeks in June of 2011, I was privileged to serve as Artist-in-residence at the North Rim; I’ve returned as often as possible since then to continue to wander the trails and write. This year, from June 23-26, I will be leading a creative writing workshop at the North Rim for the nonprofit Grand Canyon Field Institute; I’d like to invite writers in your group to join me as we practice the fine art of paying attention to what the plants, creatures, rocks, and places of the North Rim have to tell us . . . and then enjoy sharing our words with each other. I’d be happy to answer any questions folks have via email; for more information about the workshop visit  https://www.grandcanyon.org/learn/grand-canyon-field-institute/classes-tours/writing-edge Thanks!  Thea thea.gavin@cui.edu
